2017 Parent/Child Bridge Engineering Summer Camp

When:  June 19th (Monday) – June 21st (Wednesday)
Time:  8:30am (arrive at FIU) to 3pm (leave FIU)
Where:  FIU Engineering Campus / FIU Main Campus / Miami Beach Urban Studios

Registration:

Registration is FREE and includes:

  • Transportation to the camp from Overtown, Liberty City, and Little Haiti
  • Breakfast and Lunch every day
  • Bridge-related souvenir
  • T-Shirts for parent and student

More Information for Families:

The 2017 Parent/Child Bridge Engineering Summer Camp will be for students going into 3rd through 6th grade and one parent. During the three-day camp, participants will gather at FIU to learn about bridge engineering. The students and their parents will learn about:

  • Different types of bridges and how they carry forces
  • Prefabricated elements and systems and how they can be used to accelerate construction
  • 3D printing and its future in bridge engineering

Other activities included in the camp:

  • Multiple field trips (to local bridges, 3D printing lab, FIU Main Campus, FIU Engineering Campus)
  • Hands-on activities (balsa wood bridge project, 3D printing bridges, flexible foam bridges

Tentative Schedule

Monday, June 19th

  • 8am – bus pickup from Jesse J. McCrary, Jr. Elementary School
  • 8:30am – arrive at FIU Engineering Center
  • 8:30am to 9am – breakfast and introduction to camp
  • 9am to 11:30am – morning activities (introduction to bridges, ABC, and balsa wood activities)
  • 11:30am to 12:30pm – lunch
  • 12:30pm to 3pm – afternoon activities (continue with balsa wood activities)
  • 3pm – bus departs FIU Engineering Center
  • Bus information TBD

Tuesday, June 20th

  • 8am – bus pickup from Jesse J. McCrary, Jr. Elementary School
  • 8:30am – arrive at FIU Engineering Center
  • 8:30am to 9am – breakfast and introduction to day’s activities
  • 9am to 11:30am – morning activities (introduction to precasting and segmental construction, casting foam beams)
  • 11:30am to 12:30pm – lunch
  • 12:30pm – tour bridge segments outside Engineering Center then load on bus
  • 1pm to 3pm – afternoon activities (field trip to SR 826/836 interchange and FIU Main Campus tour)
  • 3pm – bus departs FIU Main Campus
  • Bus information TBD

Wednesday, June 21st

  • 8am – bus pickup from Jesse J. McCrary, Jr. Elementary School
  • 8:30am – arrive at Miami Beach Urban Studios (MBUS)
  • 8:30am to 9am – breakfast
  • 9am to 10am – introduction to 3D printing and bridge construction (MBUS)
  • 10am to 10:30am – tour of MBUS
  • 10:30am to 10:45am – travel to Miami Beach Regional Library (MBRL)
  • 10:45am to 12:30pm – hands-on activities at library MakerSpace (MBRL)
  • 12:30pm to 1pm – lunch
  • 1pm to 1:30pm – free resources through Miami-Dade Public Libraries (MBRL)
  • 1:30pm to 2:30pm – wrap up and closing ceremony (MBRL)
  • 2:30pm – depart MBRL and take bus back towards community
