2023 CUTC Summer Meeting Program (PDF)

FIU and the ABC-UTC are serving a diverse student population in a city with a diverse set of transportation-related challenges. FIU has realized the needs in the infrastructure area and the capabilities of FIU researchers and created two preeminent programs in infrastructure and wind engineering (among only five total preeminent programs across the entire university). Considering our state-of-the art research facilities and the diversity offered by FIU and the city of Miami, FIU and the ABC-UTC are an excellent choice to host the 2023 Summer CUTC Meeting.

The ABC-UTC is led by Dr. Atorod Azizinamini, who is the Vasant H. Surti Professor of Civil Engineering, Director of Infrastructure Research & Innovation; Director, Accelerated Bridge Construction University Transportation Center (ABC-UTC); Director, Preeminent Institute for Resilient and Sustainable Coastal Infrastructure (InteRaCt) and the 2015 White House Champion of Change: Transportation Innovator.

TECHNICAL TOURS

Technical Tour I: NHERI Wall of Wind (WOW) Experimental Facility at FIU

The NHERI Wall of Wind (WOW) Experimental Facility (EF) at Florida International University (FIU) was funded by NSF to be a national facility that enables researchers to better understand wind effects on civil infrastructure systems and to prevent wind hazards from becoming community disasters.

Address: NHERI Wall of Wind, 10555 W Flagler St, Miami, FL 33172

The NHERI WOW EF is powered by a combined 12-fan system capable of repeatable testing in up to 157 mph wind speeds through its flow management system. The unique advantage of the NHERI WOW EF is multi-scale (full-scale to 1:400) and high Reynolds number simulation of the effects of wind and wind-driven rain. This is accomplished using the twelve fans and a water spray system. In addition, the 16,000 sqft. fenced-off secure area enables researchers to plan and perform destructive tests for up to Category 5 Hurricane wind speeds. The NHERI WOW EF uses a wide range of equipment, instrumentation, and experimental simulation protocols, as well as a distinguished group of faculty, staff, and a well-trained team comprised of technical and operations personnel that allow for the delivery of world-class research.

Technical Tour II: The National Hurricane Center

Address: The National Hurricane Center, 11691 SW 17th St, Miami, FL 33165

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is a component of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) located at FIU in Miami, Florida. The NHC mission is to save lives, mitigate property loss, and improve economic efficiency by issuing the best watches, warnings, forecasts, and analyses of hazardous tropical weather and by increasing understanding of these hazards.

*The availability of the National Hurricane Center Tour will be dependent on the 2023 hurricane season. If there should be an active storm, the tour will be cancelled as a security requirement.
