Welcome to the 2023 CUTC Summer Meeting
Florida International University, Ernest R. Graham Center Ballrooms, MMC
11200 SW 8th St, Miami, FL 33199
Miami, Florida, June 20-22, 2023
The ABC-UTC is led by Florida International University (FIU), and its members consist of Iowa State University, University of Nevada-Reno, University of Washington, and University of Oklahoma. The ABC-UTC has the experience required to organize and host national conferences as its staff has successfully organized, national and international Accelerated Bridge Construction Conferences (2014, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021 (virtual)), with over 700 attendees from various sectors of the transportation industry and academia at each. The ABC-UTC is led by Dr. Atorod Azizinamini, who is the Vasant H. Surti Professor of Civil Engineering, Director of Infrastructure Research & Innovation; Director, Accelerated Bridge Construction University Transportation Center (ABC-UTC); Director, Preeminent Institute for Resilient and Sustainable Coastal Infrastructure (InteRaCt) and 2015 White House Champion of Change: Transportation Innovator.
FIU and the ABC-UTC are serving a diverse student population in a city with a diverse set of transportation-related challenges. FIU has realized the needs in the infrastructure area and the capabilities of FIU researchers and created two preeminent programs in infrastructure and wind engineering (among only five total preeminent programs across the entire university). Considering our state-of-the art research facilities and the diversity offered by FIU and the city of Miami, FIU and the ABC-UTC are an excellent choice to host the 2023 Summer CUTC Meeting.

Technical Tour I: FIU Wall of Wind (WOW)
Current research at FIU is enabling testing of entire structures at full-scale, leading to performance-based design for hurricanes through direct correlation of wind speed with performance and damage levels. To perform hurricane mitigation research, the wind engineering team at the International Hurricane Research Center (IHRC) and College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) at FIU has built a full-scale “Wall of Wind (WoW) facility”. The WoW is viewed as being potentially as effective for wind engineering as crash testing, which led to the development of air bags and other safety features, was for the automobile industry. Engineers liken the WoW to shake table testing, which led to performance-based earthquake engineering. https://cee.fiu.edu/research/facilities/wall-of-wind/
Address: Wall of Wind, 10555 W Flagler St, Miami, FL 33172
Technical Tour II: The National Hurricane Center
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is a component of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) located at FIU in Miami, Florida. The NHC mission is to save lives, mitigate property loss, and improve economic efficiency by issuing the best watches, warnings, forecasts, and analyses of hazardous tropical weather and by increasing understanding of these hazards. https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutintro.shtml
Address: The National Hurricane Center, 11691 SW 17th St, Miami, FL 33165
