Dismantling Of Iconic Canadian Bridge

International heavy lift and transportation specialist Mammoet has been contracted by Canadian consortium Nouvel Horizon Saint-Laurent (NHSL) – which is made up of construction company Pomerleau and demolition specialist Delsan-AIM – to work on four different stages of the Champlain Bridge deconstruction project managed by the federal corporation The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated. The project is taking place in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

ITD Wins Trio of National Transportation Awards

The Idaho Transportation Department has won three national awards in the AASHTO President’s Transportation Awards, announced at the group’s annual meeting in San Diego on Friday, October 29. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) is the national organization overseeing all the departments of transportation from each state in the country. ITD replaced two concrete bridges carrying Interstate 90 traffic over Pennsylvania Avenue in Coeur d’Alene with one bridge. To limit the duration of impacts to the traveling public, the project used Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) methods, which simplified construction and reduced the amount of on-site concrete formwork required. The bridge abutments, piers, and girders were cast off-site in nearby Spokane while work proceeded at the site.

Advanced Infrastructure Technologies Celebrates Bridge Milestone

“The SR 69 Twin Bridge is a prefabricated bridge unit [PBU] project,” Harriman said. “We had double CT girders by precasting two girders under the concrete deck and setting it on the bridge foundation one PBU at a time. Setting these units only requires a small concrete closure placement. These PBUs can be manufactured with a four-inch thick partial deck — a normal deck would be eight inches thick. That allows these even lighter units to be set in place and the deck cast on top.

Mammoet Removes Bridge in Florida

Mammoet assisted joint venture Archer Western and De Moya Group with the removal of the westbound State Road 84 bridge over I-95 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA. Mammoet’s team suggested an alternative method, which was faster and avoided the risk of crews working over flowing traffic. The team proposed to remove the entire bridge in one night by using the Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) method.

Researchers Developing Quake-Resilient Bridges in New Zealand

Researchers in New Zealand have developed new technology that could make bridges more resilient to earthquakes. Their so-called ‘low-damage solution’ has a series of rocking bridge columns that move with seismic shocks, leaving bridges with little to no damage compared to conventional building methods…“This special steel, which is usually placed in the middle of the column, is actually working as a rubber band. So, during the earthquake this high-strength steel is actually trying to bring the pier back to the original position,” Palermo said.  “And we are actually trying to combine these resilience-solutions – seismic resilience-solutions – with accelerated bridge construction. How can we actually build bridges faster and at the same time (be) resilient? This system allows (us) to do that.”

Newman Road Project Receives Indiana Engineering Achievement Award

The stone arch bridge structure was demolished, and the design and construction teams used an accelerated bridge construction bridge-slide technique to erect and install the new bridge structure. Newman Road from SR 26 to Benson Road was completely reconstructed and widened, allowing for two-way traffic at the underpass. The existing Newman Road was lowered to allow larger, heavier trucks to travel much more safely under the railroad bridge. The intersection of SR 26 and Newman Road was converted to a dual-lane roadway, and the addition of a lighted multi-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists completed the project.

MassDOT Ready to Replace Eight Bridges in Eight Weekends

The $60-million-plus accelerated bridge project tees up another $400-million makeover next year. The removal and replacement of several Massachusetts Turnpike bridges is the kind of project that could easily take years to complete. But the Massachusetts Dept. of Transportation plans to dramatically speed up the process by replacing eight Turnpike bridges during eight weekends in a $60-million-plus project the agency has dubbed the “Acceler-8,” project.

Caltrans says innovative ‘accelerated bridge construction’ method is faster, safer

Caltrans shut down Highway 99 from 47th Avenue to the Highway 50 connector for four days starting Friday to replace the bridge deck at the 21st Avenue Undercrossing. While the project is having major traffic impacts on the Sacramento region, the agency says crews are using innovative accelerated bridge construction techniques to complete the work as quickly as possible. They said the techniques avoid extensive traffic shifts and lane reductions that could last up to six months.

Work begins on ‘really important’ project to improve I-80, I-215 east belt

Gleason said construction will be conducted nights and weekends but not during peak weekday morning and evening commute times. That means all lanes of the freeways will be open during those peak commute times, but similar lane shifts and configurations are expected at times during nights and weekends over the course of the next year. UDOT also plans to use an accelerated bridge construction practice to speed up the project’s timeline, according to Gleason. That means crews will work on new bridges alongside existing bridges in the area.
