 Vantage Bridge Deck Replacement
Question & Answer:  Question & Answer - Vantage Bridge

Description:
This project replaces the concrete deck for the bridge carrying Interstate 90 over the Columbia River at Vantage, WA while maintaining two-way traffic on the span. The existing 1950’s bridge is a 2,500’+ bridge with a steel tied-arch main span and steel girder approach spans with a rapidly deteriorating deck. The high traffic volumes and long detour routes necessitate the bridge being kept open to traffic at all times. Precast concrete deck panels with ultra-high-performance concrete connections comprise the new bridge deck. Precast concrete was selected for construction speed, vibration tolerance, and long-term durability. Steel cross-frame strengthening and extensive temporary support framing were needed to provide a load path for the existing and new deck during intermediate stages of construction. Sequencing requirements and construction load allowances were developed during design and specified in the plans to establish limits for lifting gantries operating on the deck adjacent to traffic.
