In this quarterly Research Seminar, Lu Zhang, Ph.D., Principal Investigator; and Maruf Muhaimin, M.S.C.M. Student, present work under the ABC-UTC research project entitled Understanding Critical Impacting Factors and Trends on Bridge Design, Construction, and Maintenance for Future Planning [ABC-UTC-2016-C2-FIU07], conducted at Florida International University.

Description: Various impacting factors (e.g., technology advancement, climate change) may significantly impact bridge performance and asset management in the near future. This seminar presents a study that identifies the critical impacting factors and examines how these factors would impact bridge design, construction, and operation. Through in-depth interviews (N=21) and surveys (N=108) with bridge experts from transportation agencies, a total of 30 factors were identified. Among the factors, “Construction Cost,” “New Construction Materials or Structures,” “New Construction Techniques,” and “Extreme Events” were considered as the most impactful and trending factors. This study offers a holistic and deep understanding of the multifaceted factors that could affect bridges in the future, which is critical for introducing proactive and timely policies and strategies that address new challenges.
