Description:  Biochar is produced by pyrolysis of any of a wide range of biomass sources. In recent years it has been shown that adding small amounts of biochar to concrete binders can endow the material with interesting properties. We will summarize the results of our Cycle 1 research on using biochar in concrete, which has shown that biochar additions up to 7.5% by mass simultaneously shortens the material’s setting time and enhances its early-age strength gain, perhaps by passively absorbing CO2 from the surrounding environment. These properties all are advantageous for bridge construction applications where a premium is placed on shortening the construction time and reestablishing traffic flow.

Question & Answer Period: Submit your questions when you register for the seminar and also in the question box during the seminar. (15 minutes)

Certificate of Attendance: Each site registered for this seminar will receive an email for your response. Just click the first link in the email to obtain a certificate. For multiple participants at a site, the point-of-contact registrant for that site also clicks the second link in the email, logs in, and clicks “Attendees” to provide first name, last name, and email address for each participant at that site; each participant will then receive an automatic email with link to print an individual certificate. Accessing the second link in the email will also allow participants to print certificates for past seminars that were attended by simply clicking the seminar title. Please let Ms. Ankitha Arvan at FIU know if you have questions or need assistance with receiving your certificate. Ankitha’s email address is aarvan@fiu.edu.
