Simple-for-dead-load and continuous-for-live-load (SDCL) design details at intermediate piers in ABC bridges should provide good long-term performance, be as simple as possible, and be economical. Various details have been used to connect steel girders over the pier using the SDCL system, with economy greatly influenced by those details. Recent research results and case studies show that those details can be simplified to provide optimum continuity for live load over piers. This is the third and last presentation in this series and the second of two presentations on the use of SDCL design details over piers in ABC steel girder bridges. Last month’s presentation described simplified details for continuity over piers based on the latest research. This presentation focused on ABC field applications, construction issues, and in-service performance of simplified and typical SDCL details in Nebraska and Tennessee, respectively.
