Featured Presentation: From Paper to Pixels to Concrete: East 138th Street Bridge Replacement and the Evolution of Digital Delivery at NYSDOT (35 minutes)
Description:
The evolution of project delivery at NYSDOT represents a journey from the hand-drawn, ink-on-linen plans of the late 1800’s to the intelligent, data-rich 3D models of today. This presentation charts this historical trajectory, describing how over a century of paper-based drafting and CAD standards laid the foundation for the Department's Digital Delivery initiative started in 2018, and how new projects determine our future trajectory. At the center of this digital pivot is the East 138th Street Bridge Replacement Project in the Bronx—a highly complex, accelerated bridge construction (ABC) project over the Major Deegan Expressway. Facing severe site constraints, low vertical clearance, intricate utility networks, and heavy pedestrian traffic, NYSDOT successfully utilized building information modeling (BIM) and Digital Delivery to design, bid, and complete construction of the project utilizing the information model as the legal contract document. Building upon these milestones, attendees will discover how NYSDOT has scaled these practices statewide through the implementation of hybrid digital delivery workflows, the strategic use of roll plans to bridge the gap between 2D and 3D environments, and the deployment of digital inspection devices that put real-time model data directly into the hands of field personnel.
