Description: The SH 51 Bridge over the environmentally sensitive Snake River in Idaho was a deteriorating 19-span, 615-foot-long precast concrete stringer bridge in need of replacement. Challenges for the replacement project included minimizing environmental impacts to the Snake River, maintaining traffic flow during construction, and replacing the bridge in a single year. In 2018 the bridge was replaced on the same horizontal alignment in two stages to maintain one lane of traffic during construction. Additional solutions to address the challenges included maximizing the span lengths to reduce the number of in-water piers, constructing the steel-pile-bent piers without the use of cofferdams, and utilizing prestressed deck bulb tee girders with ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) keyways. The presentation focuses on the design and construction of the superstructure with UHPC keyways and the pile-bent substructure, and will include lessons learned.
