Description: The New Hampshire Department of Transportation partnered with McFarland Johnson on New Hampshire’s first use of Slide-in Bridge Construction (SIBC), also known as the lateral slide method. Completed in the fall of 2020, the project successfully replaced two bridges over and adjacent to the Bearcamp River on NH Route 16 in Ossipee. The SIBC (lateral slide) method provided an innovative solution to the key challenges at the project site, including extensive natural resources, proximity to businesses, and a locally and regionally critical route that carries an average of 11,000 vehicles per day. This presentation will touch on factors that were considered in the Department’s decision to select the SIBC method, and the design and construction of key bridge elements as well as lessons learned.

Jennifer has over 17 years of diverse experience in engineering design, project management, and construction. She has served as a Project Manager for the New Hampshire Department of Transportation since 2016. With a history of providing innovative solutions to complex challenges, she leads the design coordination, public outreach, and financial oversight of many challenging projects. Outside of work, she enjoys open-water swimming, triathlon, golf, and skiing, and serves as Vice-President of WTS-New Hampshire and her local triathlon club. Jennifer graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Bucknell University and is a licensed Professional Engineer in New Hampshire.

Sam is a New Hampshire native with more than 10 years of experience in the design, load rating, and inspection of bridges and related structures for state agencies and municipalities. In addition to his work on conventional bridge improvement projects, Sam has developed specialized knowledge and experience in the areas of Prefabricated Bridge Elements & Systems (PBES) and Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC). Sam has designed multiple award-winning bridge projects and presented at regional and national engineering conferences.

Jim has been with the New Hampshire Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Construction since 1985. Three months after being hired by the Department, Jim became a Resident Engineer and spent the next 15 years running road, bridge, water, sewer, building, railroad, and airport projects. For the remaining 20-plus years, he has been the District Construction Engineer for the east/central portion of the state. Jim’s interest and experience with construction equipment, working with contractors, and applying engineering principles to real construction issues has served him and the State well. Jim is also an Assistant Fire Chief and is married with two children.
