Description: NM 50 over Glorieta Creek is a small, unique bridge in an environmentally and historically sensitive area. The bridge is within the Pecos National Historical Park where the Battle of Glorieta Pass occurred during the Civil War. An adjacent historic well, witness trees, building, and stone wall are from the Civil War era and had to be protected during construction. A perennial stream flows beneath the bridge that feeds an adjacent wetland. The old 1923 bridge was cut apart from above and lifted out to protect the environmentally sensitive stream below, and the new 2021 bridge was built in very tight quarters within the narrow, existing right-of-way. Closure of the bridge during construction meant a 20-mile detour for those living east of the bridge who commute to Santa Fe.  As a result, construction was accelerated (7 weeks). Abutment caps, wingwalls, approach slabs, and prestressed slab beams were all precast. Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) connections were used throughout. Design and construction details, including lessons learned, are presented.

Shane is a lifelong resident of New Mexico. He is a graduate of New Mexico State University, where he obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in structural engineering. Shane’s career has focused on working in structural design with experience in building and bridge engineering. He has worked as both a design consultant and public employee. His current position is the State Bridge Engineer and Bridge Bureau Chief with the New Mexico Department of Transportation. He serves on two AASHTO Technical Committees, T-14 Steel and T-19 Software and Technology.

Kimberly has 14 years of experience in transportation engineering and bridge design. For the past nine years, she has specialized in bridge design and load rating as part of the Bridge Bureau of the New Mexico Department of Transportation. Kimberly believes that, as Civil Engineers, we never stop learning. She has earned a B.S. Technical Communication, B.S. Civil Engineering, and Masters of Engineering Management (all from New Mexico Tech) and an M.S. Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
