Description: The Massachusetts Department of Transportation undertook a project that could potentially be considered the most complicated ABC project to date in the US. The project involved the replacement of the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge in Boston, completed in 2018. The bridge is a three-span structure that carries six lanes of Commonwealth Avenue, two electrified light rail lines, two bicycle lanes and thousands of pedestrians. The bridge spans over two directions of Interstate 90 and two commercial rail lines. Complexities include long spans, a severe skew, numerous utilities, and signalized intersections. The presentation will outline how ABC was used to greatly reduce the impacts to all forms of traffic in this urban location. Several different types of ABC technologies were employed including construction of new piers beneath the active bridge and the use of a new innovative type of full-depth precast concrete deck panel. Design and construction details and lessons learned will be discussed.
