    In this quarterly IBT/ABC-UTC Research Seminar, Mohamed Moustafa, Ph.D.,P.E., Principal Investigator and Associate Professor of Civil and Urban Engineering at New York University Abu Dhabi; and Allan Joseph Romero, Ph.D., Graduate Bridge Engineer at TYLin International present work related to the Large-Scale Implementation of Semi-Proprietary UHPC with Virgin and Recycled Fiber for Full Bridge Columns.

    Description: Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is a rapidly growing construction material with excellent mechanical properties and enhanced ductility, making it a leading material for future infrastructure projects. One of the main challenges hindering the use of UHPC in large-scale applications is the high material and construction costs associated with the proprietary nature of the robust commercial UHPC mixtures and consequential logistical issues. To address some of these challenges, a scalable, economical, and ecological-friendly UHPC was developed that enables the use of locally sourced and sustainable components like recycled steel fibers for large-scale production and precast applications. A comprehensive material variability and characterization testing with structural prototyping showcasing using axial and seismic precast UHPC columns was performed. The presentation will provide some key observations and findings of the experiments, learned experience, and future recommendations that can be the basis for future design guideline documents and specifications.

    Dr. Mohamed Moustafa is an Associate Professor of Civil and Urban Engineering at New York University Abu Dhabi. He received his MS and PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from UC Berkeley in 2010 and 2014. He also obtained a Certificate in Engineering and Business for Sustainability from UC Berkeley in 2014. Moustafa has been with the Civil and Environmental Engineering faculty at the University of Nevada, Reno, since 2015 and is a registered professional engineer in the state of California.

    Allan Joseph Romero, Ph.D.

    Dr. Allan Joseph Romero earned his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno, where he also completed his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. His doctoral research focused on the experimental testing of large-scale structures using semi-proprietary Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC). He aims to make UHPC more cost-effective for large-scale applications by incorporating locally sourced and sustainable materials. Currently, he is applying his expertise as a Bridge Engineer at TyLin International.
