In July 2015 UNR tested its first column model under this ABC-UTC project (for details on these tests, go to Column Model and Testing Protocol). The unique features of the large-scale column, tested on one of UNR’s shake tables, were: (1) carbon fiber tendons for post-tensioning to eliminate permanent displacements, (2) UHPC in plastic hinges to minimize damage, and (3) a pocket column-footing connection to expedite construction. The column survived 165% design earthquake with no damage or permanent displacement. It took 200% of design earthquake to fail the column.
