Description: As the main western gateway into Nashville, the Broadway Viaduct Bridge is a crucial arterial for the city, carrying 26,000 vehicles and 7,000 pedestrians daily, as well as critical communication infrastructure for downtown. Replacing the old bridge was an incredibly complex endeavor that included working closely with many stakeholders, such as the Nashville Department of Transportation, CSX Railroad, property owners and developers. The webinar will focus on how the project was delivered under the innovative construction manager/general contractor (CM/GC) delivery method and also how the bridge was replaced by using ABC techniques that resulted in the complete replacement of the bridge superstructure during a mere 8-week full closure of the bridge. The presentation will include best practices and lessons learned. This project was accomplished with an 8 week full closure and was reopened to traffic in September of 2023.

Clayton has over 15 years of experience as an engineer for Tennessee Department of Transportation. Since joining the Department in 2008, Clayton has served as a Roadway Designer, Operations Supervisor, and Project Manager for various Alternative Contracting Projects and is currently serving as the Director of Alternative Delivery. Clayton has a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from Tennessee Tech, a Master’s in Civil Engineering from the University of Tennessee, and a Master’s in Business Administration from Tennessee Tech.

Donald McCrary, P.E.
Senior Lead Bridge Engineering
Gresham Smith

Donald is a Senior Lead Bridge Engineer at Gresham Smith. He has over 22 years of bridge design experience within the bridge industry. The many types of bridges that Donald has designed throughout his career include vehicular, pedestrian and railroad bridges. The structure types include steel, concrete and high performance steel. He has also done an extensive amount of design using Accelerated Bridge Construction methods. Donald holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Tennessee Technological University.
