Description: The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway is a toll bridge which spans over Lake Pontchartrain connecting Metairie, Louisiana to Highway 190 in Mandeville, Louisiana. The twin bridges were opened in 1956 and 1969 and are listed since 1969 by the Guinness Book of World Records as the World’s longest bridge over water at 23.83 miles long. Since neither bridge has shoulders, with the increase in traffic volume, the need to mitigate automobile accidents prompted the owners to construct Safety Bay Shoulders strategically along the sides of each bridge in 2019 to allow for storage of stranded vehicles until the motorist assistance arrive. This presentation describes how the use of Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) and Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) enabled the delivery of this project on time and on budget and minimized risk for both the owner and the contractor.
