Featured Presentation: Dogwood Bridge Replacement Utilizing Press Brake Tub Girders (35 minutes)

    Description:

This project consisted of replacing a three-span, reinforced concrete slab bridge that has subsided over the years, losing its original 2 feet of freeboard.  The bridge was replaced with a new 90 ft single-span galvanized Steel Press Brake Tub Girder bridge.  This presentation will discuss challenges and lessons learned while working through challenges such as maintaining the flow in the Westside Main Canal, maintaining power and gas transmission lines, and an accelerated schedule to maintain this highway to support the critical agricultural infrastructure through the Imperial Valley. This project was able to use innovative materials and strategies under an emergency declaration, which allowed quick action and collaboration with the consultant, NV5, the steel fabricator, Valmont Structures, and multiple utility agencies. This is the first Steel Press Brake Tub Girder Bridge that has been constructed in California. Due to the success of this project, there are now two more of its kind constructed in California and an additional two are currently being designed by CALTRANS. The project was awarded the San Diego ASCE – Outstanding Bridge Project award, and a Regional APWA Project of the year award.
