Joseph (Joey) L. Hartmann has been the Director of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Office of Bridges and Structures since 2014. His office is responsible for the development and implementation of Federal regulations, policy and technical guidance that support bridge and tunnel programs to improve safety and design practice at the national level. Dr. Hartmann’s office has statutory, regulatory FEATUR delegated authorities for implementation and oversight of the National Bridge and Tunnel Inspection Standards, compiling and maintaining the National Bridge and Tunnel Inventories, the design of major and unusual bridges and structures on the Interstate System, and the implementation of Federal floodplain regulations. Since 2005, Dr. Hartmann has been an Affiliate Professor of Civil Engineering at George Mason University. He holds Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Doctorate Degrees all in Civil Engineering from the University of Maryland.
