Description: In 2019 the Iowa Department of Transportation replaced the Iowa Highway 1 Bridge over Camp Creek using the lateral slide technology and a new Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) integral abutment connection. The bridge was completed ahead of schedule within an allowed 14-day critical closure. The UHPC integral abutment connection detail used in this bridge replacement was developed and tested in an ABC-UTC research project [ABC-UTC-2013-C3-ISU02] with Iowa DOT research project match, and was conducted at Iowa State University. The new connection design is emulative, mimicking the Iowa DOT’s standard integral abutment details. It was specifically developed for bridges that are replaced using lateral slide technology, making integral abutments constructible for lateral slides. The presentation begins with an overview of ABC activities in Iowa. The ABC overview is followed by a description of the UHPC integral abutment connection detail developed in the research. Design and construction details and lessons learned for the bridge replacement, with focus on the lateral slide and integral abutments, are then discussed.
