Description: The CTDOT Metro North/Atlantic Street Bridge replacement project bid at $74.8 million was the first use of ABC methods to replace an existing railroad bridge on the Metro-North Railroad line in Connecticut. This project was the second of a two-phase project sequence used to complete the bridge replacement. The first phase project bid at $33.9 million, started in April 2016 and finished in June 2018, included advance major utility relocation work and the relocation of the adjacent I-95 Northbound Exit 8 off-ramp requiring a new Atlantic street overpass ramp structure. The current Phase 2 project includes the railroad bridge replacement with a new 6-track, 2-span structure. The project began in April 2018 and is scheduled to be completed in November 2020. In order to make a superstructure roll-in date of June 28, 2019, the project relied on the installation of temporary railroad track jump spans to accommodate construction of the entire abutments beneath live rail traffic using only relatively short-term rail outages while the new bridge superstructures were completed off-line from April 2018 - June 2019. This methodology enabled the contractor to transport and install the six prefabricated 2-track spans into place during a 9-day time period when track service was reduced from 5 to 2 active tracks. The presentation will describe the planning, design details, and construction sequencing for this successful ABC project.
